Answer to Question 1

Answer: The textbook presents five observations or postulates and the student can choose from these.

  • As with Freud, unconscious processes remain central to contemporary psychoanalysis.

  • While psychic conflict is still a central issue, the contemporary model of the unconscious is one of a more rational set of cognitive processes than Freud theorized.

  • In general, childhood experiences are still seen as the foundation for adult personality.

  • Mental representations of self, others, relationships, etc. are seen as important and, as with Freud, are seen to derive from early experiences.

  • Development is still seen as movement from an immature, dependent state to a more independent one based on the struggle to manage sexual and aggressive urges.
