Answer to Question 1

Answer: Many fields of psychology have identified differences in how people perceive and conceptualize the world around them. One variable that has been identified and is relevant to cognitive issues in personality is the extent to which people are sensitive to their situation. Some people are defined as field-dependent in that they naturally focus on perceptual cues in the situation around them. They are almost forced to attend to salient cues in their environment and changes in those cues. On the other hand, some people are defined as field-independent because they naturally pay more attention to their own physical sensations and have selective attention to cues coming from the outside. These people can read in a noisy and moving subway car with relative ease, but a field-dependent individual would be distracted by every movement of the car, every conversation, etc.
