Generally the situation or the expected audience is a factor in how this image management occurs. The regulation of public self-presentation is termed impression management in the textbook. Theory suggests a dichotomy between authentic self-presentation and strategic self-presentation. Research suggests that in some situations, such as on-line dating, the tendency is toward strategic self-presentation and that women tend to portray themselves as lighter and men portray themselves as heavier.
