Answer to Question 1

Besides civil liability of officers, the four other negative consequences for police
officers who violate a person's rights are (1) criminal prosecution of police officers,
such as the criminal prosecution of officers who so battered a suspect that he lost an
eye (2) administrative punishment for violations of department rules, such as a
suspicion for ten days for breaking a suspect's door that was unlocked (3) exclusion
of evidence illegally obtained (the exclusionary rule), such as not allowing the
cocaine found in a suspect's apartment without a warrant or other justification and
(4) loss of law enforcement license, such as being fired by the local police
department, for accosting women victims of rape, where the department also reports
the incidents to the state.
