Federalism is a form of government in which a written constitution provides for a division of powers between a central government and several regional governments. The national government has certain express powers including the power to coin money, raise an army, and regulate interstate commerce while other powers are left to the states, including police power, which allows states to enact whatever laws are necessary to protect the health, morals, safety, and welfare of their citizens.
Federalism is displayed in law enforcement in that there are local, state, and federal agencies responsible for enforcing their respective laws. Either the federal courts or one of the state court systems will handle the processing of the case and the respective corrections system will handle the offender if found guilty of a crime.
