Answer to Question 1

Aftercare in the juvenile justice system is similar to parole in the adult criminal justice system. When juveniles are released from an institution, they participate in an aftercare program. Aftercare programs consist of transition programming to assist juveniles integrating back into their community. Juveniles can experience many difficulties adjusting to life on the outside after confinement. Case workers maintain contact with juveniles to make sure that a corrections plan is followed and ensure that the juveniles know they have someone to ask for assistance when adjustment is difficult. If the aftercare plan is not followed, juveniles can have their parole revoked and be returned to an institution to serve the remainder of their sentence.

Answer to Question 2

There are four different types of residential community treatment programs. Group homes are nonsecure residences that provide counseling, education, job training, and family living. Family group homes are run by a family, rather than professional staff, and allow troubled youths the opportunity to learn to get along in a family situation. Wilderness programs are designed to build the self-confidence and sense of self-reliance for troubled youths. Wilderness programs typically take place in the mountains, in the woods, at the sea, or in the desert. Boot camps are another form of residential community treatment. Boot camp involves strict physical training in a military-like environment.
