The death penalty is viewed as a human rights issue in Europe. Some countries have abolished the death penalty for certain crimes, and others have abolished it altogether. A total of 31 countries abolished the death penalty in law or in practice during the last 10 years. The countries that use the death penalty most frequently are China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United States, and Yemen.
