Answer to Question 1

Parole officers have many duties. They identify and supervise offenders who are eligible for conditional release from prison before they complete their entire sentence. Parole officers must ensure that parolees are abiding by their terms of parole. Some parole officers work inside correctional facilities preparing reports for parole boards. Other parole officers work as field officers in the community. Parts of their duties include helping parolees find jobs, schools, and treatment programs. They also provide resources to community agencies to assist the success of parolees. Parole officers are in charge of visiting the parolees and evaluate their progress.

Answer to Question 2

Parole is a privilege to offenders because they are released from prison before their full sentence is served. Parole is a contract between the state and the offender. The contract details conditions that the parolee must abide by in order to stay in the community. There is an understanding in the contract that offenders can be returned to prison to complete their sentences if they violate the law or the conditions of their parole. Although the parolee is out of prison and part of the community, the state remains in control of the parolee until he or she is dismissed from parole.
