Treatment could also be more effective if correctional personnel ensure that inmates are receiving the most appropriate treatment plans individualized to their needs. Program integrity is necessary for offenders to benefit, so it should be ensured that appropriate staffs are leading these treatment groups and that the treatment is matched to the interest and needs of offenders.

Prison industries originated as a forced labor based on punishment. It was then used as a way for inmates to help pay for the cost of imprisonment and as a money maker for the prison system. In the 20th century, law prohibited inmate-made goods from competition in the free market. Inmates who are forced to work at a job while in prison typically have a negative attitude about the work because the pay is so little. Other inmates enjoy working in prison industry because they have the opportunity to stay busy and earn money while working.
