Answer to Question 1

The greatest problem faced by correctional officers is the duality of their role in maintaining order and security and advocating treatment. Correctional officers today are also facing greater alienation and isolation from inmates. Correctional officers perceive significant levels of stress related to such job factors as lack of safety, inadequate career opportunities, and work overload.

Answer to Question 2

There is a need to segregate individuals who fight each other or who exhibit disruptive behavior from the general population. Good lines of communication can be established among administration, correction officers, and inmates so that problems and issues can be resolved before escalating to riot proportions.
