Contraband is any unauthorized substance or material possessed by inmates, such as weapons, drugs, alcohol, prohibited appliances and clothing. Contraband can also consist of gambling, institutional privileges, special food and canteen services, and prostitution. There are a number of ways that contraband gets into prison. Contraband can be brought in by visitors. Contraband may be introduced by corrupt staff. Contraband can be made by prisoners. Inmates can also steal contraband from other areas of the prison and use the items for illegal purposes.

Prison gangs pose security problems and cause increased levels of violence.
A prison gang is a group of inmates with identifiable leadership who are bound together by mutual interests and act in concert to achieve a specific purpose that generally includes conducting illegal activity.
