Answer to Question 1

The deprivation model views losses experienced by inmates during incarceration as costs of imprisonment. The model describes the prisoner's attempt to adapt to the deprivations imposed by incarceration.
The importation model suggests that influences that prisoners bring into the prison affect their process of imprisonment. Basically, this model proscribes that prison culture is imported from the outside world.

Answer to Question 2

The inmate code is an unwritten code regulating inmates' behavior. Inmate codes are functional to both inmates and prison administrators because they promote order in prison. Some of the proscribed behaviors of the Big House era were don't interfere with inmate interests, never rat on a con, do your own time, don't exploit fellow inmates, be tough, and don't trust the guards. This code encourages prisoners to serve their time and not create problems.
