Answer: Answer should include: Determinate sentencing increases the length of time offenders serve and decreases the use of parole. Offenders do not have incentive to behave while in prison, and infractions can increase. In addition, parole can aid against overcrowding, so decreasing its use increases the prison population.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: The salient factor score predicts the success rate of an offender if released on parole. It includes the number of prior convictions and commitments, age of current commitment and probation/parole/escape violation status.
