Answer to Question 1

Answer: Heroin abuse is increasing and so is its availability. Increased demand for heroin is largely being driven by a subgroup of prescription drug users (e.g., OxyContin abusers) who are switching to heroin because heroin is more available and less expensive. In a number of U.S. cities and counties, increasing heroin overdose deaths have been reported. Recent statistics also show that methamphetamine availability is increasing in the United States. The widespread availability of methamphetamine is directly related to high levels of methamphetamine production in Mexico.
