Answer to Question 1

Answer: Once the initial interview is completed the responding officer needs to make an initial assessment of the case and gather enough information to initiate an investigation. Answers to interview questions will help enable the officer to make an initial assessment as to whether the child is lost, has been abducted, or has left voluntarily. Questions concerning custody disputes and the possible involvement of a noncustodial family member should also be brought up during the interview. The initial assessment is the very foundation of the investigative follow-up. It is critical that a partnership be formed between the dispatcher and other officers who will be responding to the scene. This partnership is critical from the early stages until the investigation reveals what type of missing-child incident has taken place.
