Answer to Question 1

Answer: Criminal investigative analysis was previously known as personality profiling. It involves identifying psychological and social characteristics surround the crime as well as the manner in which it was committed. The profiling technique can be advantageous in illuminating certain clues at the crime scene that may not be apparent upon first examination. The psychological profiling technique recognizes that hate, passion, fear, and confusion may all have certain indicators somewhere at the scene. These can include postmortem slashing or cutting, rapes, lust, and mutilation murders. The main premise of profiling is that the crime is directly or indirectly based on the personality of the person committing it. Profiling can be helpful in cases in which the perpetrator is irrational, mentally or emotionally unstable, in hostage negotiation, and terrorism. Techniques used are brainstorming to critique the case, use of intuition to follow hunches, and educated guessing. Profiling factors do not consist of clinical observations solely but rather a collection of investigative data from which to draw inferences about the suspect, victim, and motive of the crime.
