Answer to Question 1

Three types of damages can be awarded to plaintiffs who bring forth a civil action. The first is nominal, whereby the court acknowledges that the plaintiff proved his or her allegation, but suffered no actual injury. As a result, no significant monetary contribution is provided. The second type of damages awarded is actual, whereby damages are provided for actual injuries to the victim. Damages can cover medical bills, lost wages, or other such costs. A third type of damages is punitive, which is most often sought in cases against law enforcement officials. In this case, the intent of the award is to punish or make an example of the wrongdoer; thus, significant monetary awards often are given.
