Students should explain that the act of random sampling is a defining feature of a true experiment. Random sampling refers to a process that generates a mathematically random result. It leads to a way to divide a collection of cases into two or more groups in order to increase one's confidence that:
(i) The groups do not differ in a systematic way
(ii) Unknown, extraneous variables are controlled for
(iii) Statistical techniques and reasoning that relies on randomization are used.
