(1) Permit an unlimited number of possible answers.
(2) Respondents can answer in detail and can qualify and clarify responses.
(3) Unanticipated findings can be discovered.
B) Disadvantages of open-ended questions:
(1) Different respondents give different degrees of detail in answers.
(2) Responses may be irrelevant or buried in useless detail.
(3) Comparisons and statistical analysis become very difficult.
