Answer to Question 1

Glass fragments removed from a single sheet of plate glass may not have a uniform density or refractive index value; instead, their values may vary slightly. For comparison purposes, the difference in refractive index between a standard/reference and questioned glass must exceed this value. If the test is too sensitive, it may indicate that two fragments come from different sources when they actually come from different parts of a single plate of glass.
