Answer to Question 1

They are not designed to compensate for any misalignment or end-float. They couple shafts together in the same fixed manner that welding them would, effectively making the two shafts into one. Near perfect alignment and proper support for the shafts is required. Any misalignment will cause excessive bearing wear and failure.

Answer to Question 2

A gearmotor is a gearbox with an integrally attached electric motor. Typically the motor shaft has teeth or worm threads machined as part of the shaft. Gearmotors provide a very economical drive package, but do not have the versatility or interchange ability of other types of drives.
