The neurotransmitter dopamine appears critically involved in the functioning of the system that engages the pursuit of incentives (behavioral avoidance system). In contrast, serotonin and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) are thought to mediate behavioral inhibition system functioning.

NOMOTHETIC: Assumes traits exist and have the same psychological meaning in everyone; people differ only in their relative standing on the traits.
IDIOGRAPHIC (similar to idiosyncrasy): Emphasizes that each person is unique, suggesting some traits are possessed by only one person. Sometimes, it is impossible to compare people because everyone is, in effect, on a different scale.
