Briefly describe the difference between the pleasure principle and the reality principle.

Answer to Question 1

The id conforms to the pleasure principle: The idea that all needs should be satisfied immediately. It does not restrict in any way how needs are to be gratified; just specifies that needs should be met immediately. The ego conforms to the reality principle: The idea that behavior must take into account the state of the external world rather than just internal needs and urges. The reality principle introduces rationality into behavior, i.e., if the risks of a course of action seem too high, you will find another way to meet the need. If that is not possible, you will delay gratification to a later, safer, more sensible time.
