Answer to Question 1

Answer: Discriminant validity is when a scale does not correlate with unrelated scales. This is desirable because a scale doesn't want to actually measure something other than what it's intended to measure, such as IQ or socioeconomic status.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Convergent validity is when a scale correlates with other scales measuring the same construct. You can ensure it by testing your measure against other, related scales.
