What explains why the ocean's sedimentary memory or record does not start with the oceans
  formation?
  a. Samples cannot be attained in deep water.
  b. Ocean sediment records are destroyed by subduction.
  c. No sediments deposit when new ocean basins form
  d. Sediments are buried deep and are eventually metamorphosed

Question 2

ANS: D
There are large ranges of sizes in sediments. Most marine sediments are comprised of finer particles
like clay, silt, and sand. These particles are easily transported throughout the ocean. Information can be

Answer to Question 1

ANS: B
Records on the memory of the seafloor do not start with the formation of the ocean. Subduction of
sediment deposited in the ocean essentially erase the history of ocean beyond 180 million years ago.
Information can be found in the section Sediments Are Historical Records of Ocean Processes

Answer to Question 2

ANS: D
The precipitation of calcium carbonate from normal seawater around small shells forms oolite sands.
These can form via evaporation, the decrease of acidity in seawater, and even as a result of decreases
in the temperature of seawater. Information can be found in the section Pelagic Sediments Vary in
Composition and Thickness

There can actually be a 25-hour time difference between certain locations in the world. The International Date Line passes between the islands of Samoa and American Samoa. It is not a straight line, but "zig-zags" around various island chains. Therefore, Samoa and nearby islands have one date, while American Samoa and nearby islands are one day behind. Daylight saving time is used in some islands, but not in others—further shifting the hours out of sync with natural time.
