Answer to Question 1

ANS: F
There is more heat being circulated through the atmosphere than there is in the ocean. Water vapor is
able to transfer more heat energy due to its high latent heat of vaporization. Remember, there are 540
calories of heat energy per one gram of water vapor. Information can be found in the section Surface
Water Moderates Global Temperature.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: F
The removal of heat does not correspond to a steady drop in temperature. The heat removal does lower
the temperature, but the temperature stops when there is a phase change. The temperature stops until
all the water transitions from liquid to solid, for example. Only after all of the molecules change their
state will the temperature continue to decrease. Information can be found in the section Water Has
Unusual Thermal Characteristics.
