Answer to Question 1

ANS: B
Although Captain Cook and the scientists of the Challenger did conduct some bathymetric studies, it
began with Posidonius in ancient Greece. He did his studies in 85 BCE in the Mediterranean. His crew
used 2 kilometers of rope with a stone at one end. Information can be found in the section Ocean Floor
Is Mapped by Bathymetry.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: A
The abundance of abyssal plains is inversely related to the geological activity of an area. The Pacific
Ocean is known to have active margins while the Atlantic is characterized by passive margins.
Information can be found in the section The Topography of Deep-Ocean Basins Differs from That of
the Continental Margins.
