Answer to Question 1

ANS: D
The uneven heating of the Earth's surface and the Coriolis Effect is what causes atmospheric
circulation. The warm air rises and the cool air sinks. A convection current results from the difference
in air density. Circulation is further moved by the deflection of moving air and water due to the
rotation of the Earth. Information can be found in the section The Atmosphere Moves in Response to
Uneven Solar Heating and Earth's Rotation.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: B
The doldrums, trade winds, and westerlies are symmetrical along the meteorological equator. They
shift north during the northern summer and south during the northern winters. Information can be
found in the section Atmospheric Circulation Generates Large-Scale Surface Wind Patterns.
