Answer to Question 1

Ocean current measurements consist of measurements of velocity and direction and velocity for surface and subsurface current flow. Both surface and subsurface currents can be measured directly or indirectly. Direct methods of ocean currents are floating devices that are can be tracked over time or fixed devices. Indirect methods consist of determining the internal distribution of water density and the corresponding pressure gradient, radar/satellite altimeters to produce dynamic topography maps, and Doppler flow meters to determine subsurface water movement.

Answer to Question 2

There is a rapid change in salinity between the depths of about 300 meters (980 feet) and 1000 meters (3300 feet). For the low-latitudes, the change is a decrease in salinity, because surface water salinity is high due to evaporation and little to no precipitation and runoff. For the high-latitudes, the change is an increase in salinity because surface water salinity is low due to abundant precipitation and runoff and the melting of freshwater icebergs. In addition, cool temperatures limit the amount of evaporation that takes place.

Giardia is one of the most common intestinal parasites worldwide, and infects up to 20% of the world population, mostly in poorer countries with inadequate sanitation. Infections are most common in children, though chronic Giardia is more common in adults.

Side effects from substance abuse include nausea, dehydration, reduced productivitiy, and dependence. Though these effects usually worsen over time, the constant need for the substance often overcomes rational thinking.

Acetaminophen (Tylenol) in overdose can seriously damage the liver. It should never be taken by people who use alcohol heavily; it can result in severe liver damage and even a condition requiring a liver transplant.

People who have myopia, or nearsightedness, are not able to see objects at a distance but only up close. It occurs when the cornea is either curved too steeply, the eye is too long, or both. This condition is progressive and worsens with time. More than 100 million people in the United States are nearsighted, but only 20% of those are born with the condition. Diet, eye exercise, drug therapy, and corrective lenses can all help manage nearsightedness.
