Answer to Question 1

The largest marine community-also the most sparsely populated-lies within the uniform mass of permanently dark water between the sunlit surface and the deep bottom. Few animals live there because so little food is available, but those organisms that survive are among the strangest in the ocean. Opportunities for feeding in the deep open-ocean are few and far between, and some animals are able to consume prey larger than themselves should the occasion arise. Because so few animals are present, mating is also a rare event; in a few species, males and females become permanently bonded during their first encounter the male burrowing into the female's body for a lifelong free ride.

Answer to Question 2
