In both photosynthesis and chemosynthesis, energy is captured to build simple carbohydrates and other organic molecules. In photosynthesis, water and carbon dioxide are combined using energy captured from sunlight to produce carbohydrates and oxygen. In chemosynthesis, however, energy from broken chemical bonds can be used to, for example, combine carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide to produce carbohydrates and sulfate.
