Scientists are not always certain of the cause of causes of each mass extinction, but leading candidates for a couple of these events include the collision of an asteroid or comet with Earth, or massive volcanism leading to rapid climate change. Other potential contributing factors or mass extinctions may include the breakup, collision, or rearrangement of continents, changing currents patterns, or even large-scale oceanic anoxic events.
