How has discovery of these minute phytoplankton changed our understanding of marine food webs?
  1.No change, as theyre too small to be eaten by anything.
  2.The base of the food web has organisms much smaller than diatoms.
  3.Their growth is usually limited by nutrients, hence theyre unimportant.
  4.They are actually eaten by all marine life.

  1.dolphins, sharks, and other large predatory fishes
  2.deep-sea bioluminescent fishes
  3.small drifting organisms like those in the upper circular area
