Answer to Question 1

ANS: B
Alfred Wegener believed the continents were slung toward the equator due to a combination of the
Earth spinning and tidal drag. This was not a sufficient enough explanation for the acceptance of
continental drift. Later it would be discovered that seafloor spreading and plate tectonics would
explain the force of his theory. Information can be found in the section Pieces of Earth's Surface Look
Like They Once Fit Together.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: D
Dr. Ballard traveled 9100 ft in Alvin to observe the structure of a mid-ocean ridge including the rift
valley, fissures, cracks, and faults, and lava flows. Information can be found in the section Insight
from A National Geographic Explorer: Dr. Ballard recounts an expedition to a mid-ocean ridge.
