ANS: B
Alfred Wegener believed the continents were slung toward the equator due to a combination of the
Earth spinning and tidal drag. This was not a sufficient enough explanation for the acceptance of
continental drift. Later it would be discovered that seafloor spreading and plate tectonics would

Dr. Ballard traveled 9100 ft in Alvin to observe the structure of a mid-ocean ridge including the rift
