Answer to Question 1

ANS: D
The chemical composition of the two layers is about the same. The temperature in the lower mantle is
higher likely due to the pressure. The increase in temperature makes the lower mantle denser.

ANS: C
Earth's densest layers are in the interior. The core substances should be denser than the rocks from the
deep drill holes. Information can be found in the section Earth's Interior Is Layered and Figure 3.5.
