What is the distribution of neritic sediments, by size, from the shoreline outward towards the deep
ocean? What facilitates the movement of each size of sediment? What will be an ideal response?

Question 2

Define well-sorted and poorly sorted sediments. What is expected on the deep ocean floor? Which is
found close to shore? Include information about the energy associated with each and the avenues of
transportation of these sediments. What will be an ideal response?

Answer to Question 1

ANS:Answer
should include:
In general, the distribution of particle sizes moves from large to small composition as
they move farther away from shore. Different size sediments are moved in various ways.
Natural marine processes tend to sort the sediments by size.
Neritic sediments like sand are mostly terrigenous in origin. These larger particles are
found close to shore. These can be formed by erosion on the land and brought to the
continental shelf by rivers. This particle size is distributed by currents.
Silts and clays are found in deeper waters. These lightweight, small sediments are
distributed by wave actions and currents. The finest of these sediments can stay in the
water for decades before settling on the deep ocean floors. These particular sediments
are moved by deep water currents.
Larger sediments can be transported to other sections of the continental slope via
turbidity currents.

Answer to Question 2

ANS:Answer
should include:
Well-sorted sediments are dominated by one particle size. Poorly sorted sediments are a
mixture of sizes.
Well-sorted sediments are commonly found in the deep ocean. This is due to narrow
changes in energy at these depths.
Well-sorted sediments in the deep ocean are transported by ocean currents.
Poorly sorted sediments tend to be close to shore. They occur in areas with high erosion
rates because of the high energy fluctuations. The erosion and wave action creates many
different particle sizes.
Poorly sorted sediments are transported by turbidity currents.
