Sometimes silica gel is dried in a microwave oven. Explain why the silica gel is hot to the touch when removed from the oven even though it does not absorb appreciable amounts of microwave radiation.

Question 2

Some polymerization reactions are carried out using microwave energy. Although the reaction temperatures can be relatively high at the beginning of the reaction, they decrease as a function of time. Explain this observation, assuming that the monomer used in the polymerization reaction has a significant molecular dipole moment. An example of such a polymerization reaction is shown in Equation PE19.2.

Answer to Question 1

The water within the silica gel is heated and eventually evaporates from the silica gel. Much of the heat that is generated from the water is transferred to the silica gel.

Answer to Question 2

Answer to Question 3

As the concentration of monomer decreases with time, the amount of polymer increases. The monomeric units within the polymer have restricted movement and dielectric heating is dramatically decreased, leading to a reduction in temperature with time.

There are actually 60 minerals, 16 vitamins, 12 essential amino acids, and three essential fatty acids that your body needs every day.

Did you know?

A good example of polar molecules can be understood when trying to make a cake. If water and oil are required, they will not mix together. If you put them into a measuring cup, the oil will rise to the top while the water remains on the bottom.

Vaccines prevent between 2.5 and 4 million deaths every year.

Did you know?

People with alcoholism are at a much greater risk of malnutrition than are other people and usually exhibit low levels of most vitamins (especially folic acid). This is because alcohol often takes the place of 50% of their daily intake of calories, with little nutritional value contained in it.

Did you know?

Illness; diuretics; laxative abuse; hot weather; exercise; sweating; caffeine; alcoholic beverages; starvation diets; inadequate carbohydrate consumption; and diets high in protein, salt, or fiber can cause people to become dehydrated.
