How many mg of sodium bicarbonate are needed to completely react with 122 mg of benzoic acid? What are the products of this reaction?

Question 2

Liquid-liquid extraction (Section 7.6.1) is a technique used in organic chemistry that requires the use of two immiscible solvents. A compound distributes between two immiscible layers in an amount proportional to its relative solubility in each solvent.

Answer to Question 1

MW of benzoic acid = 122.12 mg/mmol; MW of sodium bicarbonate = 84.01 mg/mmol The reaction involves 1 mmol of benzoic acid. Therefore, 1 mmol or 84 mg of sodium bicarbonate is required.

Answer to Question 2

When diethyl ether was added to the benzoic acid/water mixture, the benzoic acid dissolved in the ether. This was proven by then removing the ether layer, placing it on a watch glass, and evaporating the ether leaving behind the benzoic acid.
