Reliance on spiritual support appears to be important to African Americans who are, as a group, more intensely involved in religious activities. They are more likely to rely on God for support than are European Americans. Churches have historically offered social support to the African American community as well as advocating for personal justice and providing support to individuals in times of personal need. Similar effects of spirituality are found in Asian and Asian American populations. Of the oldest-old in China, the risk of dying in any given year was 21 lower for those who were religious participants. Asian caregivers of dementia patients who were more religious report being better able to handle the stresses of caregiving than those who were nonreligious.
