Answer to Question 1

There are many things to consider when choosing an assisted-living facility, such as how will the facility respond to the changing needs of the client? Is the facility near family, friends, and shopping? What is the facility's philosophy of care? Do they admit those with severe cognitive or physical impairments? What type of training do staff members receive? Are staff members required to complete continuing
education? What types of social and recreational activities are offered? It is wise to visit the facility more than once and unannounced. Families may watch the interactions of staff and residents, visit at mealtime to determine the quality of food and service, and importantly, talk to the residents who live there.

Answer to Question 2

ADU stands for auxiliary dwelling unit. These are portable homes that can be used temporarily or permanently. Also known as granny pods, ADUs contain a number of smart devices that do everything from serving as virtual companions to providing knee-level lighting to reduce falls and offering ceiling mounted lifts to increase mobility. ADUs provide proximity to family, yet privacy for the resident. They encourage independence and aging in place.
