A witness must have personal knowledge of the matter before the court; through some special circumstance or ability have direct, firsthand, or authoritative knowledge of the facts of the case. Witnesses must be prepared to issue an oath or make an affirmation that the information they are testifying is truthful. The most important qualification is competency. Competency has three primary considerations: the person must be able to independently recollect and communicate the events in question, have the ability to separate fact from fiction, and have the ability to adhere to the veracity requirements.
