They must contain numbers between 0 and 255, and are four groups of numbers separated by periods. Each of the four groups are called an octet because they consist of 8 bits. Remember that computers communicate in binary form, so to the computer, the number between 0 and 255 will look like 11011000.00011011.0 0111101.10001001 . Counting all of the zeros and ones reveals that the number is actually 32 bits (0s and 1s) in length.
