Answer to Question 1

The Supreme Court later clarified its position in the case of Richards v. Wisconsin, 520 U.S.
385 (1997), holding that police can dispense with the knock-and-announce rule if they have reasonable suspicion that such a requirement would be dangerous or futile, or that it would inhibit the effective investigation of the crime by, for example, allowing the destruction of evidence.
