Hassan al-Banna in the early 1900s started the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. Sayyid Qutb, also in the early 1900s, is called the father of modern terrorism and used the ideological beliefs of al-Banna and the Muslim Brotherhood to develop revolutionary arms throughout the Middle East. Fathi Shaqaqi formed the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) from the Gaza Strip and gained support from Syria and Iran. Dr. Ramadan Abdallah Shalah became the leader of PIJ. Sheikh Ahmed Yassin founded Hamas, which is the largest and most successful Islamic fundamentalist group. 19th Century Muslim reformers, Muhammad Abdu, Jamal al-Afghani and Rashid Rida founded the Islamic philosophy of Salafism. Usama bin Laden became the charismatic and instrumental leader of the Jihadist Salafi movement, after the Soviet-Afghan War. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini was a conservative and radical cleric that created a fundamentalist movement within the Shiite known as Khomeinism. Hassan Nasrallah created the paramilitary organization known as Hezbollah.
