Answer to Question 1

In commercial theatre, investors back a single production and take a capital return if a show is a success. Because the financial risks are high, commercial theatre is rarely the home of experimentation or performances with limited appeal. In contrast, professional not-for-profit theatre typically presents a season of plays for runs of predetermined length. Some focus on particular kinds of performancethe classics, new plays, or multicultural performanceswhile others offer an eclectic repertory. To qualify for tax-exempt not-for-profit status, a not-for-profit theatre must develop goals and a mission statement and file for not-for-profit status with the Internal Revenue Service. They depend on subscriptions, grants, private donations, and foundation and corporate support for their survival, and profits are channeled back into the producing organization to defray costs for the institution and to fund new projects.
