An amphoteric compound or ion is one that can behave either as an acid or a base in solution, depending on the chemical environment. In reaction (1 ), it acts as an acid by donating a hydrogen ion. In reaction (2 ), it acts as a base by accepting the hydrogen ion.
(1 ) HCO3- (aq) + H2O (l) = HCO+ (aq) + CO32- (aq)
(2 ) HCO3- (aq) + H2O (l) = H2CO3 (aq) + OH- (aq)
