Removal of groundwater can cause subsidence. If the water removal is stopped, will the land likely rise to its original level?

  A) Yes, because it was only the removal of water that resulted in the subsidence.
  B) No, subsidence causes the ground to become more compact, hence it is not able to hold as much water as it once did.
  C) Yes, but only if the aquifer hasn't already been depleted.
  D) No, the land usually rises above its original level because subsidence has the effect of loosening soils, hence it increases their capacity to hold water.
