Suppose that water is used in a thermometer instead of mercury. If the temperature is at 4C and then changes, why can't the thermometer indicate whether the temperature is rising or falling?
 
  A) The water molecules will be a mixture of ice and water, and a change in temperature will only change the proportions of its phases.
