Answer to Question 1

The color of the carpet can contribute significantly to minimizing the appearance of dirt,
particularly for entrances and lobbies, which get the bulk of tracked-in soil. If possible, colors
should be chosen which blend with the color of the dirt brought in from outside. Since the
most common dirt colors are greys, beiges, browns, and reds, carpet colors for entrances
should be chosen from these tones. The best choice would be a tweed coloration combining
two or more of the colors.
Another choice might be a multicolored, patterned carpet which would provide additional
visual interest while helping camouflage dirt and spills until they can be removed. Such
highly patterned carpet is a popular choice for hotel lobbies and restaurants.
Lighter, more delicate colors are best reserved for inside spaces (e.g., offices, guest
rooms, lounges) where soiling rates are obviously lower and the danger of accidental spills
is more remote.
