It involves giving a user tasks to complete with limited, or no instructions, and observing how they can or cannot perform the tasks in the application. As a developer of the application, it is easy to miss small steps or wording that may be misleading to a user unfamiliar with the application, so usability testing puts the developer in the shoes of the user.
